Adkins was raised by a single mother living in various working-class communities of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music in her early years and learning how to play the clarinet as well as the guitar. However, it wasn't until her early teens, when she began to discover the rhythm and blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th-century artists, that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. She was in a secondary school for the visual and performing arts, which was funded by the federal government. A friend uploaded songs Adkins had written on Myspace. Her music soon caught the attention of record labels and in 2006, just a few months after graduation the school, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
